June Bryan/College Station Update
Before this month’s outreach, I was meditating on the story of the woman at the well in John 4. I was remembering the intense shame, embarrassment, and guilt that I felt several years ago as God approached me at my own well. I remembered the moment I heard God declare to me that He indeed thirsted for me, longed for me, and desired me, despite all my filth. As I remembered that moment, I began to intercede for the women at the clubs. I prayed that they would hear the invitation from the mouth of God...the call to give their hearts to the One who sees, knows, and desires them. As I continued reading in John 4, I came across the following passage: “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.” Before the outreach, we began to pray that our women across Texas would indeed hear and know the reality that the One we have been telling them about is indeed the Savior of the world.
We walked into the club feeling empowered to listen and to love. Within minutes of walking into the dressing room, two women sat us down and began to open up their hearts and lives to our club team members. They were hungry for someone to engage with them in their story and to really care about what they were saying. As we listened, tears began to fall freely, and the Spirit began to move in powerful ways. We are excited and expectant for these relationships that will continue outside of the club.
As I was handing out the “Jesus Loves Strippers” shirts to some of the new girls, I saw a dear friend walk into the dressing room. We have walked with her for a couple of years, helping her make the bold and courageous move to transition out of the club. As she saw the purple shirts, I saw shame wash over her face. I walked up and gave her a hug, but she avoided any eye contact or conversation with me. As the night progressed and I finished up a conversation with another woman, she came and bent down next to me to apologize. Slowly but surely, she unfolded her recent story: the situation had become dismal for her and her kids and, out of desperation, she found herself back at the club. I was thankful to be able to extend love and grace to her in a vulnerable moment.
This month, God truly re-ignited in me a passion for the women in the commercial sex industry. Though I’ve been serving with JSL for some time now, I’m constantly amazed by the Lord’s outpouring of love and passion concerning these women. I am encouraged by what this renewed call speaks of God’s heart for his people: he burns with a desire to see these women whole and loved in His presence. I have been fully affirmed in my call to work full-time for JSL, and I’ve been given a fresh joy to invest myself fully into this specific Kingdom work! This month has also been good for our Bryan/College Station team. God is daily teaching us about how to better love and serve the women from the club, affirming our call with incredible testimonies from dancers’ lives.
