August Waco Update
From City Team Leader Kristi:
For the Waco JSL team, July was a month of rest. With no scheduled outreach, we view this month as a time of sabbath: time for rest, reflection, and preparation for the upcoming year.
“This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel says, In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength…” Isaiah 30:15
Rest looks different for everyone. It is essential that all believers find a given place to meet with God in full confidence that the time spent investing in His presence will return to us twofold. As a wife and mother of small children, I’ve found that I have to be intentional about setting this time...or God can easily be to the back burner in lieu of preparing meals, laundry, playdates, exercise, coffees, and lunches...the list goes on and on. We all have our day full of things. These things aren’t necessarily bad, but when we place those things before our time with the Lord, they become idols.
Isaiah 30:15-18 was put on my heart during this July season of rest. I was reminded why time with the Lord is not only important, but absolutely crucial.
(Continuing on from above in verse 15)
“...but you would have none of it. You said , ‘No, we will flee on horses. Therefore you will flee! You said, ‘We will ride off on swift horses. Therefore your pursuers will be swift! A thousand will flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five you will all flee away, till you are left like a flagstaff on a mountaintop, like a banner on a hill. Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for Him.” Isaiah 30:15-18
We were not made to flee when we are threatened. Instead, we are made to be a light in the darkness. He is a God of justice. He shows compassion to His children. Because He is sovereign, we have rest, quietness, trust, strength, and above all salvation. Thank goodness He is gracious!
When we want to escape, we usually go somewhere familiar, even if this place is harmful. With these thoughts in mind, I immediately considered the women who escape into to the dark, smoky clubs night after night. For our women, this place of familiarity and “comfort” is a form of escape from something or someone, whether a scarred past or a lingering, threatening current situation.
I have been in places where I was fleeing more than I was staying and holding fast to the truth of God. I had people in my life who continued to love on me even in my darkest times. When we go into the clubs each month, that is what God is calling us to be: a light in the darkness for Him. At every retreat, we are called to speak light and truth into the darkness that the enemy is pushing down on the women. With every meal prepared, every gift given, and every conversation held, we are to be the light of God.
I want to encourage all the members of our JSL team. Whether you go in the clubs, drive us to the clubs, cover us in prayer, prepare meals, donate financially, etc., you are serving the Lord and helping to shine His light into the lives of women who are surrounded by darkness. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do to help this ministry thrive here in Waco. God is opening doors all over our city to better serve the women we are working with. We would not be able to do it without you! God is providing in ways that only He can, and I am overjoyed to see His hand at work through JSL.
I ask that you continue to pray as we continue to follow our calling. On August 15, we will be doing our “Back to School” outreach. We will be providing Chick-Fil-A nugget trays as well as school supply vouchers for the women with children that need assistance in this area. 80% of the dancers in our area are mothers. If they express that they are in need of school supplies for their children, we will personally take them shopping with these gift cards. Besides meeting a tangible need, this will be a great time for relationship-building outside of the club.
Pray that women will reach out to us so that we can show them love through the school supplies.
Pray for the children that will be receiving the school supplies, that they could see the love and provision of Jesus through this gift
Pray for reconnection with women that have we have not heard from since the last outreach
We will also be starting our “Day Away” retreats on Sunday, August 17. This is a time where women are invited to come worship with our team, then spend the day at a private residence in Waco where we are able to really pour into them. We have volunteers that serve as babysitters so that the women can really focus and have a break. God ALWAYS shows up in a big way on these retreats.
Pray for attendance. The enemy tries really hard to keep them away, especially after a long night of dancing
Prayer for the womens’ hearts to be open to hear God speaking to them
Prayer team: I am excited to announce that we now have CHILDCARE offered during prayer on outreach nights! That means all members of the family can participate in prayer! Having males and females as part of the prayer team is extremely powerful, so I would like to encourage you to prayfully consider being a part of JSL in this way.
Go team: Our team is growing which is a HUGE blessing and answered prayer. We are still in need of one more female to join our club team and two more males to join our security team
Hospitality team: With our retreats and outreaches back in full gear, we need volunteers to use their gifts and skills to prepare meals and treats monthly.
If you would like more information on becoming a part of any of our volunteer teams, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
