2018 ANNUAL REPORT

EMPOWERED CHANGE.

Words cannot express the deep gratitude we feel for you. Because of YOUR generosity, lives have been changed. Stories have been added to. YOU have been a significant part of our story in 2018. Check it out!

GO. LOVE. CONNECT.

Club Outreaches. Lunch. Coffee. School shopping. Homemade pies. Flowers. Tears. Laughter. Disappointments. Job interviews. Hospitalizations.

It all begins with relationship. No strings attached.

It's never boring nor predictable.

The women we serve are some of the most resilient out there. And it is our honor to walk along side them in whatever capacity they are in.

Launched in Spring of 2017, ACCESS is our new transition program for women exiting the commercial sex industry.

ACCESS is a holistic training program aimed at gaining access to power, influence and opportunity for individuals exiting the commercial sex industry.

During the program, students receive a living expense stipend. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to step into full time employment or become eligible to apply for a microloan to start a small business through Lovely Enterprises.

LOVELY ENTERPRISES

Lovely Enterprises had its second full year in operations. Our aim as a social enterprise of JSL is to reduce recidivism into the sex trade through sustainable products, female empowerment programs, and micro-loans to survivors.

We do this by:

  • Providing wholesale accounts for our products to retailers. All products are ethically sourced and socially responsible.

  • Lovely Pop-Up Shows.

  • Partnership with Access 1 & 2 which includes internships, job training, business planning and job creation.

  • Community Impact Initiatives like GRL PWR (day camp for girls) and special community wide events like 2nd and Clay.

  • Volunteerism where community members help run the store and fulfill customer orders.

We are excited that our products are carried at Magnolia Market and Shops at Spice Village via Congress Clothing.

STOP DEMAND SCHOOL

2018 was a formative year for SDS. Offering a class almost every other month, we collected significant data on each offender that will afford us formal statistics on the sex buying population in Texas.

We also made improvements to course content.

SDS is a large part of our program culture. Not only from a funding persepective, but as a transformational awareness program on the demand side of the commercial sex industry.

Our goal in the years to come is to make SDS available in all JSL cities.

WILD TORCH 2018

April 23, 2018 was a NIGHT TO REMEMBER. Our fourth installment of Wild Torch was a CELEBRATION. We welcomed our ACCESS graduates to share their stories and invite others to be a part of the work JSL is doing.

We heard about the success of Stop Demand School to date and how it’s impacting the demand side of the commercial sex industry. We also heard about Lovely Enterprises and the new work happening in the social enterprise of JSL including our journey into our microloan program and our partnership with Revive USA.

The night was unlike any other and we cannot wait to see where Wild Torch will go from here.

MAN IN THE MIRROR COLLECTIVE (MITMC)

MITMC serves as a brotherhood of men advocating for and with women. The objectives of MITMC are for men to: look inward (examine attitudes, biases and behaviors regarding women, approach to sex and masculinity), stand with survivors, refuse sexist behaviors, and contribute financial resources (to help fund programs and organizations, providing resources for victims of domestic, physical and sexual violence).

FINANCIAL SNAPSHOT

JSL experienced revenue growth of 7% in 2017 while decreasing our operating expenses by 16%. We accomplished this with intentional evaluation of all budget expenses as well as a decrease in outreach activity in San Antonio. In particular, we were blessed with significant support from individuals, organizations and event driven donations. This allowed us to end the year with an operating profit. We used a significant portion of these profits to invest in future staff positions, much needed office equipment and job creation through Lovely Enterprises.

We are grateful to God and all our partners who helped make our work in 2017 reality.
