September City Updates

DALLAS UPDATE

Snapshot:

  • 200 lipsticks/lip glosses gifted
  • 4 Dallas clubs

Story:

Our lipstick/lip gloss outreach is one of the favorite gifts we take in. We were armed with all types - reds, pinks, nudes, frosted, matte, glossy - 200 of them! Each year we bring them in, the women always love looking through all of the colors and picking out their favorite ones. It’s always an easy conversation starter.

These last few months have been a bit of a “dry spell” for our team. Our prayers before leaving we for sweet conversations and for relationships to be built. We were eager to have our entire team with us as well - we were back, full force.

Jesus showed up and showed off in the sweetest ways.

Conversations were abundant and new relationships immediately began to form as plans were made to meet outside of the clubs in the coming weeks. Five women reached out to us regarding leaving the industry and our team was able to schedule time to meet with three of them the following week. Please be in prayer for their journeys.

Great conversations were had in each club - another woman mentioned she just graduated from beauty school and she’s ready to start a new chapter of her life.

Once more, we were unable to enter the dressing room of our last club. However, the House Mom there asked that we not give up on them - she mentioned that when the manager had told her we were there, the women gave him an earful about us not being able to take gifts back and visit with them. Please continue to pray for this club - prayers for a change of heart in the manager and that our team would not lose hope, but keep pressing on.

City Needs:

  • Continued financial support for the Dallas budget for 2017
  • Prayer team growth

KILLEEN UPDATE

Snapshot:

  • 25 lipsticks and Bath & Body Works products gifted
  • 4 Club Team members
  • 1 Prayer Team member

Story:

This month, the Killeen Outreach team consisted of four of us out in the field, and one faithful prayer warrior. We arrived at the club quite a bit later than we usually do, and as a result there were significantly more cars in the parking lot than we are used to seeing. We were greeted with smiles by the girl at the front desk, who we've noticed has been there fairly consistently over the past few months. She recognized us right away, and we chatted with her for a few minutes while she perused through the Bath and Body Works lotions, soaps, and sprays, and Mary Kay Lipsticks that we had brought to give out this month. After she had selected a few items, and bantered for a moment with the bouncer who nosed in while we were talking with her, our front desk girl waved us through into the club without any further questions. Walking into the haze and smoke of the club is always like entering into another world; one filled with secrets and shadows, that I know I may never quite understand. We took our deep breaths as the air conditioning blasted our hair away from our faces and the bump of the music hit, and I could feel it in my eardrums and my chest, all the way down to the soles of my feet. Even peripherally in the dim lighting, we could tell there were quite a few customers scattered about the establishment, just as the elevated number of cars out front had suggested.

The dressing room was full, more so than it was at the outreach in August. A few of the girls stopped what they were doing, excited to see us, asking about what we had brought this month. Some of them we knew and recognized, and immediately began to hug and catch up. However, I am always struck by how many of them approached and hugged us with enthusiasm, even though we may have been complete strangers. Many of them are familiar with Jesus Said Love, referring to us affectionately as the “Church Ladies” or the “Jesus Ladies”.  The Bath and Body Works items and the lipstick may have been our most popular gift yet, and combined with the homemade chocolate chip blondies, even the shy girls could not resist ambling over for a peek at what the commotion was all about. A few of them asked us how much what we had brought would cost, and were assured that the gifts were free, simply because we love them. They gushed over the scents and colors, and we all took turns smelling lotions and comparing lipsticks, holding sticks up to faces to see which complexion would pair best with each color. This seemed to bridge any gap or awkwardness that may have potentially been felt, as we immediately were able to jump into conversations and interactions with ease.

We met new girls and caught up with some veterans that had not been seen in a while, discussions ranging from the frivolous to more serious. A new girl even expressed interest in attending church, while chatting with one of our Club Team members. Another shared that she had just moved to the area from another state, and was dancing to supplement her income while working elsewhere during the day. Some phone numbers were exchanged and per usual, the girls were provided with the Jesus Said Love contact information and encouraged to call if they ever need anything. Before leaving, we were sure to stop by the club manager’s office, to deliver a blondie and check in – he expressed gratitude for our presence, and we were again reminded how fortunate we are to have developed such a good relationship with this club’s manager. We left, meeting up with our security team outside, who reported that the only excitement he’d had was being asked if he had any pot to share, a requested he had graciously declined.

It is interesting how the week leading up to an outreach always seems to be full of struggle, tension and disappointment. I spent the week wrestling with myself and my insides, and more than once even asked the Lord why I was feeling this way. And it is never until we meet to pray and go out that I realize and connect the rough week with the immense responsibility and weight of what we are about to do with Jesus Said Love. Our team is small, but we are faithful and we are joyful, and we LOVE these girls. Of course the devil tries to mess with that each week. And of course he is unsuccessful; because remember, the Kingdom has already won. And in this case, the Kingdom smells like cigarettes and perfume, and it has never had such a sweet aroma.

HOUSTON UPDATE

Snapshot:

  • 160 lipsticks gifted (donated by Elijah Rising)
  • 3 Houston clubs
  • 17 Prayer and Club Team members

Story:

In the wake of Harvey we had our hearts and minds prepared to hear stories of loss and devastation. Immediately we knew there were a few women who suffered complete loss of their homes and possessions. We were able to help one woman by getting her a new pair of shoes and groceries - she’s currently staying in a hotel, looking for a new place to live while she awaits FEMA aid. We are also in the process of helping another woman who lives with her family - they also lost everything in their home. While devastation has been present, it has been amazing to watch our city's churches and other surrounding states unite and rally together to help those affected by Harvey. Witnessing all the heroic acts of rescues reminds me of the most heroic act for all mankind made by our Lord Jesus. His love has been on display for the world to see as we help one another from every tribe, tongue and nation rebuild their lives after Harvey.

The lipsticks that were graciously donated to us by Elijah Rising were loved by all the ladies. The managers were happy to see us and were thankful that we reached out during Harvey to help in any way we could. Some of the clubs sustained minor damages from the floods, but are still up and running.

Finally, we are excited to announce the first ever JSL "You Are Loved Retreat" will be held in November for all the women we reach to come and have a day of rest and relaxation. Houston's First Baptist Church has graciously donated their facilities to host our women. Please be in prayer that this retreat will lavish our women with love and for our team that will be serving them.

Going forward our team will be encouraging those women who need help to reach out to us. Please continue to pray for Houston, other cities, states, and countries affected by natural disasters. Then ask yourself - how can I be the hands and feet of Jesus in their lives?

WACO UPDATE

Snapshot:

  • 28 lipsticks and lip glosses gifted

Story:

September was a special outreach. We had several ladies from a church in Dallas volunteer at JSL over the weekend. The ladies put together September’s outreach gift of lipsticks and lip glosses in sweet mini bunches with ribbon and thoughtful cards. As we gathered for prayer before leaving for the club, the group joined us in fellowship and worship. We divided into groups to pray together over outreach, JSL, and ladies at the club. It was a beautiful experience to pray with sisters in Christ, who the very next day, were hosting a gathering for women and their children. It touched my heart to meet these women, who travelled all the way from Dallas, to love on the ladies and children through JSL.

Outreach at the club went well. The girls loved the mini gifts and we talked with them about the next day’s family event. We were able to meet some new girls and tell them about JSL, and we saw familiar faces that greeted us with hugs. It was a true night of fellowship. Before we left for the club Marti, our Prayer Team Leader, said that the Lord put a certain name on her mind. While at the club, we spoke with a girl who we had all met several times, what we didn’t know is that she also goes by the name that had been placed on Marti’s heart that evening. It’s often the little things that remind us that the Lord is walking with us and continually showing His will through JSL.

When we returned to 1500 Columbus, our new Dallas friends were still there praying and waiting for us to return. As we walked into the room, I saw that they were applying tape over art canvases, spelling LOVE. They were to be used the next day as a paint craft for the families. Again, it was incredible to see this group of ladies serve and love so hard. It was a refreshing night of fellowship before, during, and after outreach. The Lord blessed us with the energy we needed and GREAT things are to come this year at JSL.

Needs: We are looking for committed volunteers to join our prayer team. If interested, please email waco@jesussaidlove.com.
